In Search of Superheroes
Spiderman, Superman, Braveheart, Frodo (even The
Incredibles)—the theaters are full of the magical tales of superheroes. If
today’s culture can’t find real ones, we’ll make them up, or settle for
manufactured heroes like the faces that smile at us on the cover of every issue
of People magazine. Of course, there are some real heroes out there—today and in
history—people like Ernest Shackleton, George Patton, Helen Keller, Winston
Churchill, and Elsa Parks. While you’re shopping for heroes to glue your soul
onto, don’t overlook the heroes of the Bible. These are God’s "picks" and He’s
knows a real hero when He sees one. Lay your soul up against these folks this
summer and pick at least one to match strides with in your own search for
personal significance!

Title:
Abraham: Faith Against All Odds
Scripture: Genesis 22
Date: July 2 Speaker: Pastor Wayne Smith
Description: It is easier to trust God for something you
don’t have, than it is to trust God with something that you do have! The Bible
celebrates the faith of Abraham when he believed that God was going to give
him a son in his old age. But the Bible puts on a Fourth-of-July fireworks
display when Abraham obeys God by offering up his son, Isaac, on a stone
altar. Hold your breath as Abraham raises the dagger over his son’s heart and
see what God has up His sleeve!

Title:
Joseph: On Never Giving Up
Scripture: Genesis 45
Date: July 9 Speaker: Pastor Tim Walton
Description: Joseph was born with the proverbial
golden spoon in his mouth. He lived a charmed life into his teen years. And
then the wheels fell off—hated by his brothers, sold into slavery in a foreign
land, thrown into an Egyptian prison. Very few biblical characters had more
reason to give up all hope in God. Have you ever been tempted to throw in the
towel on faith? Let’s take a lesson from a man who just refused to quit the
faith-walk!

Title:
Joshua: Courage for Scary Times
Scripture: Joshua 1
Date: July 16 Speaker:
Pastor Gordon Everett
Description:
All his life he had played second fiddle to the great leader, Moses. Now,
Moses was dead, Jericho loomed across the river, and everybody was looking at
him. The city of Jericho was humanly impregnable. Besides that, the Jordon
River flowed at flood stage. Where do I turn in my resignation? Likely went
through his mind. What do you do when you are faced with an assignment that
looks impossible?
Listen:

Title:
Gideon: Trusting God’s Weird Math
Scripture: Judges 7
Date:
July 23
Speaker: Pastor Tim Walton
Description: If Gideon had presented
his business plan for military victory to venture capitalists, he would have
been laughed out of the room! But time and again, God pulls off huge wins
against all reasonable odds. The nest time the deck seems stacked against you,
take a tip from Gideon about playing the "God-card"!

Title: Jonathan: Whatever the Cost
Scripture: I Samuel 20 and 23
Date: July 30 Speaker: Pastor Wayne Smith
Description: Jonathan rather
gets lost in the brilliance of the David-story. But in his own right, he was a
champion for God. He has his own kind of "David and Goliath" story. But the
most heroic thing about this man is that he gave up his own position and his
own aspirations to a younger man—and to the will of God. Jonathan was a hero
and he paid the ultimate price!

Title:
Ezekiel: "Live, On-Stage for God"
Scripture: Ezekiel 4 and 5
Date:
August 6 Speaker: Pastor Gordon Everett
Description: Here is a hero whose
ministry includes "live" performance. Ezekiel becomes a practitioner of public
art, an actor in symbolic theater given right out in the open where everyone
can see. God wrote the plays, and gave Ezekiel his cues. Some of the roles are
disturbing, and some are downright undignified! Sometimes faithfulness to God
requires pushing the edge in order for God’s message to get through. Let’s
take some lessons from this unusual prophet.

Title:
Esther: Choosing to Exit Your Personal Comfort Zone
Scripture: Esther 4
Date: August 13 Speaker: Pastor Wayne Smith
Description: Esther had it made! She
had it all. She inhabited a daily world of luxury and regal splendor—she was
waited on hand-and-foot. Anything she wanted was there for the asking. Then
cousin Mordecai showed up with news and an appeal that put all her luxury and
security at risk. Would Esther try to blend into the background or would she
take action and put her very life at risk. Take heart from her immortal words,
If I perish, I perish!

Title: “What To Do When You Don't Know
What To Do”
Scripture: Psalm 62
Date: August 20 Speaker: Guest Speaker - Jim Gwinn:
Jim recently retired from the presidency of CRISTA Ministries
after several decades of distinguished leadership. Before that
Jim served Vice President of Moody Bible Institute, Youth Pastor
of Moody Church , and as Executive Director of Sambica Bible Camp
in Issaquah. Jim and Karen have two adult sons living in
Southern California and in the greater Chicago area, and have
eight grandchildren. Jim is a classic car fancier--a few summers
ago, Jim and Karen took a nostalgic journey along Route 66 in his
classic Corvette. He is an incredible encourager. He loves
pastors and churches and loves people who don’t know Jesus.
Jim’s been all over the world and had many incredible experiences
in his adventure of serving Jesus. His next chapter of ministry
will commence in November as the community chaplain for a resort
community in Palm Springs.

Title:
Jeremiah: Stuck in the Mud!
Scripture: Jeremiah 38
Date:
August 27
Speaker: Pastor Tim Walton
Description: How would you like to be
recruited for a life work and be told at the initial interview that it was
absolutely certain that you would fail in everything you tried to do? Some
job!!! That’s exactly what happened with Jeremiah. He preached his heart out
for God, and it was like preaching to a brick wall. After years of faithfully
calling his countrymen back to God, they threw him into a dry well where he
sank down into the sucking mud—talk about a low point [pun intended]. So, was
Jeremiah a personal failure? Or does God define success in a different way?

Title:
Habbakuk: Arguing with God!
Scripture: Habakkuk 1-3
Date:
September 3
Speaker: Pastor Wayne Smith
Description: Are you concerned about
the moral state of America? Do you worry about threats to our national
security? I’ll bet these things do weight heavy on your heart. And I’ll bet
you pray about these things, as well you should. But what if things get even
worse? Does that mean God isn’t listening to you? Should you get cynical?
Should you throw in the prayer-towel? The newspaper headlines in Habbakuk’s
day read a lot like ours do—let’s learn how to be heroic prayer warriors from
a man who walked long on the well-worn path of the lonely and argumentative
intercessor!
